TDC has identified the operation of a fishing bait business as a potential opportunity to create new employment, economic and skill development opportunities for the local people of Wadeye. Through working with and supporting Traditional Owners within the region, TDC and Traditional Owners are developing a sustainable, locally owned and operated business.

The TDC fishing bait business aims to provide fish and bait to the local market as well as businesses within Darwin. The business provides a variety of fresh fish that is sourced locally and sustainably by Traditional Owners in the pristine waters of the Thamarrurr region.

The fish includes:

  • Bait fish
  • Salmon
  • Barramundi
  • Mudcrabs
  • Mullet
  • various other local NT table fish categories

The operations team has five Aboriginal Coastal Licenses (ACL) in the Thamarrurr region that were part of fishing bait trials carried out at Old Mission and Fossil Head during 2016 and 2017.

The licences have an annual quota of 5 tonne each and are held by:

  • Leon Melpi
  • Theodore Dooling
  • Dick Parry
  • Jason Singh
  • Alo Nganbe.
