Nanthi Mak Cypress Message Stick

Message sticks are made from thay lakumin – cypress pine. Message sticks were sent between clan groups and tribes to confirm ceremonies, request help from other groups or announce intertribal wars. The message sticks told the time it would take the visiting clan group to travel and sometimes the route. The carrier was given immunity to pass through the country of different tribes without retribution. Sometimes the message stick would transfer to another clan groups and a relay of messengers would undertake the journey when a lot of country had to be covered.
